FAQ

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.

Do I need a work permit if I have a partner visa?

It depends on your partner's status in the Netherlands. If your partner is Dutch, for example, you are normally free to work without a TWV. Partners of highly skilled migrants, European Blue Card holders, researchers and certain other residence permit holders can also work freely. Always check the wording on the back of your residence card to confirm your work rights.

How can I check if I am allowed to work?

Check the back of your Dutch residence permit. If it says “Arbeid vrij toegestaan. TWV niet vereist”, you are free to work and your employer does not need to arrange a work permit for you. If your card contains different wording, check your conditions before accepting a job.

How many hours can I work on a partner residence permit?

If your residence permit states that you are free to work, there is no specific immigration-related limit on how many hours you can work. You can apply for both part-time and full-time positions.

What documents do I need to apply for work?

You should have identification, a BSN and a valid Dutch residence permit showing your employment rights. Additional information may be required when you complete your employment contract and onboarding.

Does my employer need to sponsor my visa?

If your residence card states that you are free to work and that a TWV is not required, your employer does not need to sponsor you in order to employ you. Your right to live in the Netherlands remains connected to your residence permit.

Can I work if my partner is an international student?

This is an important exception. If your partner has a Dutch residence permit for study and your residence permit is based on staying with them, you are generally not allowed to work. Always check the employment status printed on your residence card.

Can Brave Ones help me if I am restarting my career in the Netherlands?

Yes. Brave Ones connects internationals with English-speaking job opportunities and employers who understand different residence statuses. This can be especially useful if you have recently moved to the Netherlands and want to start earning, gain Dutch work experience or rebuild your career.
